The fine line: Sexy vs. A la mode

So recently I have been noticing more and more how the gap between what is fashionable and chic for women, and, what is considered as stereotypically 'sexy' is getting bigger and bigger. Turbans, wide legged pants, chunky heels, costume jewellery and flowing, wildly printed tunics are from a majority-male perspective either "granny-like" (a term I have now heard more than a few men utter), weird looking or OTT. A lot of the time I find that women tend to move and evolve with fashion and that men seem to be stuck at a standstill in the same dire stereotype of what is 'hot' and what is not for women. Exhibit A:The bellybutton ring, a perfect example, is seen as a common sexy staple by most men in my experience. The bellybutton ring (and I don't intend to offend anyone when saying this) is, as I see it, associated with the words 'trashy' and 'common', and, some would say the ultimate middle aged divorcees favourite trinket. Yes, it was a major hit in the 90's and early 2000's throughout the whole Spice Girls, Xtina and Britney phase, however it is now nearly 2012 and appears to be very 'Bellville' or 'the other side of the Boerewors curtain-ish' in my opinion (two phrases I use again without intent to offend, that slightly point towards or suggest a sense of lack of culture, taste or connotations of a commoner).

Another one- diamante anything. Diamante as in fake tiny "diamonds". Delicate and very "mooi" (the 'poppy' kind of pretty that is) these diamante are seen on the nails, on the jewellery, embellished on the phone... And men seem to enjoy nice diamante here and... everywhere. What a shame. Let me proclaim- 'poppy' ain't pretty (unless you're a flower).

Another one- the frequent extreme use of overboardly tight clothing. Yes, I am a fan of a nice body con dress, some gorgeously fitted skinnies and a tasteful tank top (note the word 'tasteful') but come on, in an era where loosely fitting garments, the goddess revival and 'flowy chic' are inspiring- men are making it harder for us to avoid the 'bag lady' label, to win their acclamation and to look a la mode and vogue-hot simultaneously. Now bear in mind that I am not saying we dress for men. We dress for ourselves and our fellow women fashionistas. However it would be nice to dress up (an act of our own creative expression and style) without appearing as fruitcakes, clown-like or weirdos in the eyes of men.

Alas, there is nothing more refreshing than a male who appreciates a tasteful fashion statement.

Maybe this all comes down to a lack of open mindedness, imagination or creativity? I am not too sure, all I know is that I gave my boyfriend a Vogue to study and examine after he told me my new gorgeous and extremely chunky tan heels weren't sexy.

A few things I bought these past summer holidays... A bit outdated. Going to start blogging more regularly from now on.

Internship starts now

Hi sunbeams. Today I start my internship at GQ magazine, as a fashion intern.
I'm am really excited because it is rare that a student who's still in the process of finishing their degree gets the opportunity to intern. The GQ fashion department were looking for a suitable intern and went over to ask Glamour magazine (GQ and Glamour are both under the same publishing house Conde Nast), luckily Glamour's fashion editor, Bronwyn Day, who I had the privilege to meet a few months ago, recommended me.... and... voila day one starts today.

2011 Designers "Resort" looks

Love the free spirted look to this dress
much enhanced by the silk material and pastels. Second look- Meditteranean 'goddess' inspired. Gorgeous.
Very striking electric turquoise-blue, weird design which I am drawn to for some reason.
Both Chloe- soft and feminine with an emphasis on the waist.
Versace- Lilac pastels...love.                      Emilio Pucci- Hippy chic, but not too hippy.
Emilio Pucci- Slinky and damn sexy. The material... wow.    Ferragamo- A lovely little red number.
Ferragamo- These two looks to me are perhaps the sexiest out of all of them. The define the confident, modern day woman in a powerful manner, whilst still achieving elegance.
And we have some Gucci- I think these two hip and carefree looks would perhaps better suit a woman with height.
Marc Jacobs- Oh how I wish they styled this dress with a pair of gorgeous espadrilles. Would have looked even better! The second look- Gucci- soft materials and soft colours sexified with a lovey slit up the front, stunning.
Both Roberto Cavalli- One of my favourite designers, even though I like these two looks they aren't my favourite in comparison to those of his previous collections.
Roberto Cavalli- Love this look, fun and tropical in a sense. Versace- This is almost a combination of warrior and goddess, love love love this dress, extremely striking.
Adore this flirty summer look.                      Girl meets boy.

Fashion Shoot- Boudoir meets uptown chic

These are a few photos from a shoot I styled and did the hair & make up for a while back, Clare Robertson (http://www.clareamor.blogspot.com/) being the photographer and Aurora Marco (http://themowgli.blogspot.com/) being the model. The shoot’s top secret location is especially one of a kind and in my opinion contributes to a great deal of it’s excellence. It epitomises much of Cape Town’s beauty- with the famous Green Point stadium, gorgeous sea and mountains in the background. Both looks demonstrate two particularly upcoming styles. For the first look I went for high fashion chic combined with boudoir babe- stone coloured fur, black lace worn with a turban and chunky, tan heels (watch out for this specific shoe style this season- Zoom already have examples in store). The second look combines an electric blue blazer (bold colours are all over Europe), with a peek of white lace, brown suede ankle boots and ocular sunglasses (a shape that is also in this season). The read lips result in a cheeky guise. Hope you like them!
PS. Lion’s head was beautiful! Now for Table Mountain this Sunday. Love playing tourist sometimes.
